HPL & compact laminate cubicles

HPL compact laminate cubicles are made from solid high-pressure laminate board, usually 12 or 13mm thick, with a coloured face and a dense black or white core. Because the board has no chipboard inside, it does not swell when wet, which makes it the most popular choice for busy commercial washrooms.

Why compact laminate is the workhorse

Compact laminate is waterproof through its whole thickness, so it can be mopped, steam cleaned and used in wet areas. It resists impact and graffiti, and fixings hold firmly in the solid board. Panels stand on adjustable stainless steel or aluminium legs, which leaves a gap at the floor for cleaning and air flow.

Finishes and hardware

Boards come in plain colours, woodgrains and stone effects. Hardware is usually satin anodised aluminium or brushed stainless steel: indicator locks, rising or self-closing hinges, coat hooks and door stops. For high-traffic sites we specify stainless steel throughout and a continuous headrail.

Where it suits

Offices, schools, colleges, gyms, leisure centres, shopping centres, transport and healthcare. It is the grade we recommend most often because it lasts, and it costs far less to look after over its life than chipboard systems.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HPL and compact laminate?

HPL is the laminate itself. On cheaper cubicles a thin HPL skin is glued over chipboard. Compact laminate, also called solid grade laminate, is HPL built up into a solid board with no chipboard core, so it is waterproof all the way through.

How thick are compact laminate cubicle panels?

Usually 12 or 13mm for panels and doors, with 13mm the most common in the UK. Pilasters may be the same board or a thicker framed section.

Is compact laminate fire rated?

Fire-retardant grades are available. If your fire strategy needs a particular classification, tell us at survey and we will specify and evidence the board to match.
