Toilet cubicle and washroom FAQs
Answers to the questions we are asked most about commercial toilet cubicles, materials, prices, regulations, timescales and installation.
All questions
How much do toilet cubicles cost to supply and fit?
As a guide, from about £380 per cubicle for MFC, £620 to £1,050 for compact laminate, and £1,350 to £2,600 for full-height cubicles, supplied and installed, ex VAT. A full washroom refurbishment is typically £3,500 to £7,500 per WC position. We confirm a fixed price after a free survey.
What is the best material for toilet cubicles?
For most commercial washrooms, compact laminate (also called solid grade laminate or compact HPL). It is waterproof all the way through, hard to damage and easy to clean. MFC suits dry, low-traffic staff toilets on a tight budget.
Do you cover the whole of the UK?
We install across England, Scotland and Wales from our Birmingham base. Surveys are booked to suit your programme, and larger projects get a dedicated site lead.
How long does it take to fit cubicles?
Most runs of four to eight cubicles are fitted in one to two days once the room is ready. Manufacture usually takes two to four weeks from drawing sign-off.
Do new washrooms have to follow Approved Document T?
In England, Approved Document T has applied since 1 October 2024 to new buildings other than dwellings and to material changes of use, with exemptions including schools. It asks for single-sex toilets, or fully enclosed universal toilets where space does not allow. We design layouts with this in mind and confirm with your building control body.
Can you work outside our opening hours?
Yes. We phase work, fit in the evening or at weekends, and keep at least one washroom open wherever the building allows.
Do you only fit cubicles, or the whole washroom?
Both. We can supply and fit cubicles alone, or refurbish the whole washroom including plumbing, IPS, vanity units, wall and floor finishes, lighting and accessories.
How much do commercial toilet cubicles cost?
As a guide, supply and installation runs from about £380 to £620 per cubicle for MFC, £620 to £1,050 for compact laminate, £950 to £1,650 for flush-fronted systems and £1,350 to £2,600 for full-height cubicles, ex VAT. We confirm a fixed price after a free survey.
How long does it take to fit toilet cubicles?
A run of four to eight cubicles is usually fitted in one to two days once the room is ready. Manufacturing lead times are typically two to four weeks from drawing sign-off, depending on material and colour.
Can you fit cubicles outside opening hours?
Yes. We can phase work and fit in the evening or at weekends so a building can keep at least one washroom open.
What is the difference between HPL and compact laminate?
HPL is the laminate itself. On cheaper cubicles a thin HPL skin is glued over chipboard. Compact laminate, also called solid grade laminate, is HPL built up into a solid board with no chipboard core, so it is waterproof all the way through.
How thick are compact laminate cubicle panels?
Usually 12 or 13mm for panels and doors, with 13mm the most common in the UK. Pilasters may be the same board or a thicker framed section.
Is compact laminate fire rated?
Fire-retardant grades are available. If your fire strategy needs a particular classification, tell us at survey and we will specify and evidence the board to match.
How long do MFC cubicles last?
In a dry staff washroom, well-installed MFC cubicles commonly last many years. In wet or high-traffic washrooms their life is much shorter, which is why we compare whole-life cost with compact laminate at survey.
Can MFC cubicles be used in showers?
No. MFC is not suitable for showers, changing rooms or any wet area. Use compact laminate there.
Do full-height cubicles need their own ventilation and lighting?
Usually, yes. Once a cubicle is closed to the ceiling it needs extract and lighting inside, and it may affect fire detection and sprinkler layouts. We coordinate this with your electrician or M&E designer at survey.
Are full-height cubicles required by law?
Not in every case. Approved Document T applies to new buildings other than dwellings and to material changes of use in England, with exemptions such as schools. Where it applies, fully enclosed universal toilets are needed if space prevents separate single-sex toilets. Your building control body has the final say.
Are flush-fronted cubicles harder to maintain?
No. The fronts are smoother than pilaster systems, so they are quicker to wipe down. Concealed hinges can be adjusted without removing the door.
Can flush-fronted cubicles be full height?
Yes. Most flush-fronted systems can run floor to ceiling, which is a popular way to build premium self-contained toilet rooms.
Do school toilets have to follow Approved Document T?
Schools are exempt from Approved Document T. School toilet provision in England is set by the School Premises Regulations and Department for Education guidance, which we follow when planning layouts.
Can you fit school toilets in the summer holidays?
Yes. Holiday installation is our default for schools. Book the survey a term ahead so materials are made in time.
Are anti-ligature cubicles 'ligature proof'?
No product is ligature proof. Anti-ligature design reduces risk. We select components against your organisation's risk assessment and explain the residual risks clearly.
Can damaged panels be replaced individually?
Yes. Compact laminate systems are modular, so we can replace a single door, panel or pilaster without disturbing the rest of the run.
Do IPS panels need a plumber?
IPS involves moving cisterns and pipework behind the panels, so a plumber is part of the job. We coordinate the plumbing as part of the installation.
How much space does IPS take?
A duct zone is typically 150–300mm deep, depending on cistern type and pipework. We allow for it in the cubicle depth at survey.
Do I need urinal screens?
They are not usually a regulatory requirement, but they make a big difference to privacy and are expected in modern commercial washrooms.
Can cladding go over tiles?
Often, yes, if the tiles are firmly bonded and the wall is flat enough. We check this at survey.
Are sensor taps worth it?
In busy washrooms, sensor taps cut water use and are more hygienic because nobody touches them. They need power or batteries, which we allow for.
Do you fit the showers and drainage too?
We fit the cubicles and coordinate plumbing, drainage and floor finishes through our trades, so you can have one team for the whole changing area.
What is a changing village?
A changing village is a shared changing area made up of private lockable cubicles instead of separate open male and female changing rooms. Users change in private and share the circulation, lockers and showers.
Can lockers be fitted with digital locks?
Yes. Keypad and RFID locks are common in gyms and workplaces, and can be master-keyed for staff access.
How much does a commercial washroom refurbishment cost?
As a rough guide, a full refurbishment costs about £3,500 to £7,500 per WC position ex VAT, depending on finishes and how much plumbing moves. A six-WC washroom is therefore often £21,000 to £45,000. We give a fixed price after survey.
How long does a washroom refurbishment take?
A single washroom of four to eight WCs typically takes one to three weeks on site, after two to four weeks for design and manufacture.
What is a Doc M pack?
A Doc M pack is a set of sanitaryware and grab rails specified to meet Approved Document M for an accessible toilet: typically a raised-height WC, small basin, drop-down rail, grab rails and fittings, laid out as a corner arrangement.
Is an accessible toilet the same as a Changing Places toilet?
No. A Changing Places toilet is larger and adds a height-adjustable changing bench and a hoist. If you need one, tell us at enquiry and we will scope it separately.
Do you charge for design?
No. Layout design is included with every survey and quotation.
Can you match my existing cubicles?
Usually. Send photos of the door edge, lock and hinge and we will identify the system and colour, or suggest the closest match.
Do you supply sanitary bin services?
We fit the units. Ongoing collection services are provided by specialist hygiene companies, which we can introduce.
