Accessible toilets & Doc M packs

An accessible toilet is a room designed for wheelchair users, with transfer space beside the WC, grab rails, an emergency assistance alarm and a basin within reach. A Doc M pack is the matching set of WC, basin, rails and fittings laid out to Approved Document M. We design, supply and install complete accessible rooms and ambulant cubicles.

Wheelchair-accessible rooms

The usual unisex corner layout is about 2200mm by 1500mm, with an outward-opening door, a drop-down support rail, horizontal and vertical grab rails, and colour contrast between walls, floors, fittings and rails. An assistance alarm is fitted with a pull cord reachable from the floor.

Ambulant and enlarged cubicles

Ambulant cubicles are slightly wider than standard, with grab rails and an outward-opening door, for people who can walk but need support. Where a washroom has four or more cubicles, an enlarged cubicle of about 1200mm wide is also recommended.

Approved Document M

We follow Approved Document M Volume 2 for non-domestic buildings and BS 8300 good practice, and we flag where Approved Document T's universal toilet types apply.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Doc M pack?

A Doc M pack is a set of sanitaryware and grab rails specified to meet Approved Document M for an accessible toilet: typically a raised-height WC, small basin, drop-down rail, grab rails and fittings, laid out as a corner arrangement.

Is an accessible toilet the same as a Changing Places toilet?

No. A Changing Places toilet is larger and adds a height-adjustable changing bench and a hoist. If you need one, tell us at enquiry and we will scope it separately.
