The six steps
- Survey and design: measure the room, check provision and draw the new layout.
- Approvals: landlord consent, building control where the work is a material alteration, and asbestos checks on older buildings.
- Manufacture: cubicles, IPS and vanity tops are made to measure, usually in two to four weeks.
- Strip-out: old sanitaryware, cubicles and finishes are removed and waste cleared.
- First and second fix: plumbing, drainage, electrics, lighting and ventilation.
- Fit-out and handover: IPS, cubicles, vanity units, finishes, accessories, testing and a final clean.
Keeping the building open
Phase the work so another washroom stays open, or hire temporary welfare units. Night and weekend working shortens disruption in shops, offices and venues.
Budget guide
Most refurbishments come in at about £3,500–£7,500 per WC position ex VAT. Moving drainage, upgrading ventilation and premium finishes push towards the top of the range.
