Accessible toilets, ambulant cubicles and Doc M packs explained

Short answer

An accessible toilet is a room for wheelchair users with transfer space, grab rails, a drop-down rail and an assistance alarm. An ambulant cubicle is a slightly wider WC cubicle with grab rails for people who walk with difficulty. A Doc M pack is the set of sanitaryware and rails laid out to Approved Document M.

  • Small basin within reach of the WC
  • Drop-down hinged support rail
  • Horizontal and vertical grab rails
  • Colour contrast between rails and walls

Getting the details right

Colour contrast, door weight, the alarm reset position and the height of accessories are where accessible toilets most often fall short. We check them all at handover.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to provide an accessible toilet?

On new non-domestic buildings and many alterations, yes. Approved Document M sets the expectation, and the Equality Act 2010 requires reasonable adjustments for disabled people.
